Media Director

Role Overview

We are hiring a hands-on Media Director / Content Lead who can:

  • Define and drive the editorial & growth strategy for JoynTokyo
  • Create high-quality English content yourself (articles, guides, playbooks, basic scripts for short-form video, etc.)
  • Manage and grow a writer team, scaling content volume without losing quality
  • Connect content to business outcomes: traffic growth, newsletter sign-ups, service inquiries and B2B leads

This is a builder role: you will both do the work yourself and design the system that lets JoynTokyo scale.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Ownership

  • Own the overall content & media roadmap for JoynTokyo (topics, formats, channels).
  • Translate our business goals (traffic, leads, sponsor value) into a clear content strategy and quarterly plan.
  • Decide what we publish, where we publish it, and why.

Content Creation (Hands-on)

  • Research, plan and write original English content: in-depth guides, how-to articles, checklists, interviews, landing copy, etc.
  • Create editorial structures and templates (content briefs, outlines, style guides) that others can follow.
  • Ensure every piece of content has a clear CTA and funnel (email capture, inquiry, booking, etc.).

Team & Workflow Management

  • Recruit, brief, and edit a network of freelance writers and contributors.
  • Build simple but robust workflows: briefing → drafting → editing → publishing → promotion.
  • Maintain and improve editorial quality: tone of voice, fact-checking, structure and clarity.

Growth & Lead Generation

  • Work closely with the founders/BizDev team to align content with B2B and B2C offerings (e.g. promotion packages, working holiday services, etc.).
  • Use SEO, analytics and basic CRO to decide what to produce and how to optimize existing content.
  • Plan content that supports lead generation for our partners (schools, real estate, HR, etc.) and our own services.
  • Coordinate with social media staff to repurpose content into short-form video and social posts.

Measurement & Improvement

  • Define and track key metrics: organic traffic, rankings, engagement, CVR to inquiry/lead, newsletter growth.
  • Run simple experiments (titles, angles, CTA placements) and share learnings with the team.

Requirements

Must-haves

  • Native-level English with excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Proven experience growing a content-driven media or brand
    • e.g. online magazine, blog, content hub, niche media, or similar
    • You can show numbers: traffic growth, lead growth, subscribers, etc.
  • 3+ years of experience in one or more of:
    • Content Lead / Head of Content
    • Managing Editor / Editor-in-Chief
    • Content Marketing Manager / Growth Content role
  • Hands-on ability to research, write and publish content yourself (not just manage others).
  • Experience managing writers or creatives (freelancers or in-house).
  • Solid understanding of SEO fundamentals (search intent, keyword mapping, internal linking, on-page basics).
  • Comfort using tools like Google Analytics / Search Console / basic dashboards to make content decisions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with audiences in Japan (residents, students, workers, travelers) or other international markets.
  • Basic familiarity with Japan (living experience, or strong interest in Japanese life & culture).
  • Experience working with B2B clients (education, real estate, HR, tourism, etc.).
  • Ability to collaborate on short-form video concepts (Reels/TikTok/YouTube Shorts).

Benefits

  • The chance to build a media brand from early stage to category leader.
  • High ownership: you’ll have real influence on editorial direction, brand voice and growth strategy.
  • Direct impact on both reader experience (foreigners in Japan) and partner succes (our B2B clients).
  • Flexible work style (startup environment, small team, fast decisions).
  • Competitive, experience-based compensation.

How to Apply

Please send:

  • Your CV / LinkedIn
  • Portfolio or examples of media / content you have grown (with metrics if possible)
  • A short note (5–10 sentences) explaining:
    • A media project you helped grow
    • What you would do in your first 90 days to grow JoynTokyo

We’re excited to meet builders who care about both great content and real business impact.
